Prescription Acne Medication Must Be Taken With Caution

Many people immediately turn to their dermatologist when they begin to experience acne, looking for a prescription acne medication. But you should know that prescription acne medication is not always the recommended route for every acne sufferer. In fact, many of the patients that run to their doctor for an answer do need medication at all.

Just as with all medications, prescription acne medication comes with side effects and you should take it with caution. Prescription drugs should be treated as a last resort, not a first course of treatment. Some of the serious side effects that come with prescription pills are sensitivity to the sun. When you go out into the sun, even with protected skin, you are very likely to experience sun burns. These pills can affect the growth of and the color of the teeth as well.

It is very important not to use any prescription acne medications when you are pregnant. Milder antibiotics such as tetracycline may affect the bone and tooth development of the fetus causing deformities and defects. Other drugs such as Accutane have been known to cause severe birth defects. As with any prescription drugs, acne remedies need to be used with caution and always under a doctor’s supervision. And it is always recommended to try non-medical routes first.
